It is very easy to divide a room if you have enough money. You can hire an architect or interior designer, find the best price on Ikea furniture boxes. Or just draw the lines with duct tape and move on to furniture assembly work. But what if the budget is tight?
How much does it cost to build a wall to divide a room?
Asking how much does it cost to build a wall to divide a room is like asking: How much does it cost to heat the sky? Well, the answer is nothing. If you don't want the space divider up, just take it down.
So instead of asking how much does it cost to build a wall that divides a room, let's ask: how much does it cost to divide a room with a wall?
First we need to look at what types of walls we're talking about.
Types of Walls and Their Costs
Plaster - per sheet is about $4.00
Lath and Plaster - lath is the mesh material that goes on the wall to give it strength, then plaster is applied to the back side of it. The finished product will cost you between $6.50 - 7.50 per square foot
Studs are usually sold in bundles of 4. The cost is about $5.00 per bundle
Cinder block can be as expensive as $4.00 each or as inexpensive as $0.90 per brick and they're usually sold in pallets at construction supply stores for between $12 and $15 a sheet, depending on the size of the sheets you buy
Sheetrock is the wallboard, and it costs between $3.50 - 4.50 per sheet, depending on if you go for a blue board or a green board (blue boards are water resistant)
Another option is to use plywood panels. You can buy them in varying thicknesses (1/4", 5/8", 3/4" and more), but the thinner they are, the more you pay. They run about $5 per sheet
The cheapest option is to build your wall with cinder blocks, buy plywood panels for the wall facing (you can paint it any color you like) and use nailgun to install them on top of cinder blocks. And then just paint the whole thing if you want to hide that it's plywood facing.
The total cost of building the wall is $2.80 + $5.00 + $3.50 = $10.30 per square foot of finished wall space... But wait, there is another option!
You can also use brick to create a room divider. It's much easier if you have access to a brick wall that you can use as the base for your room divider, but even if you don't, you can just buy a one-piece product called 'Brick Veneer' which you stick on top of your drywall and it looks like a brick wall.
The cost of the bricks depends on how many you purchase. If your local supply store has them priced by each (like Lowe's and Home Depot), then you can get one hundred bricks for about $45, but if they're sold in pallets, then it will be cheaper because you can get approximately 2200 square feet of brick covering for $150.

Add a mirror to the wall to make it look larger
The size of the room divider is not limited to wall space. If you have a large mirror , you can install it over the couch or the bed to create an illusion of more distance between these pieces of furniture, but you still keep them in one room.
Use art and curtains to divide your living room without using up any physical space
Put the sofa in front of the window. If you have a good view from that spot, then no one will want to sit on the couch, they'll all gather around the window seat, creating an invisible wall between them and your living room.
You can use curtains or blinds - it doesn't matter if they're open or closed. Just make sure that they remain over the window so nobody sits on the couch. If you have no windows, then put some kind of art above where your sofa will be positioned.
Make sure it's either very large or very impressive so that people will want to walk past it and spend time looking at it.
There are many ways to divide a room without spending money. You can hang curtains, you can use art or mirrors, even large furniture like sofas and tables can act as dividers - if they're placed in front of the TV or away from the window.
The best thing about this is that you don't have to do any construction. You can just put a cushion on the floor and you already have an invisible wall between your bedroom and living room.
